BB Methodology
Established back in 1883, Boys' Brigade activities has advanced and diversified overtime with its exposure to various cultures along different eras. Yet, the seven principles emphasized by The Boys' Brigade have remained unchanged. The purpose of these methods is to achieve the aim of The Boys' Brigade: " The advancement of Christ's Kingdom among young people and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian Manliness."
1. COMPANY
A Company is the foundation of The Boys' Brigade, where most activities and training are conducted. Brigaders build relationships with Officers and other members during regular Company gatherings. We hope for a Brigader to develop a sense of belonging to the Company and builds a trusting relationship with the Officers, enabling them to discover their purpose in life and faith in Christ through BB.
2. CHURCH CONNECTION
Church is an important aspect of The Boys' Brigade. Each Company must be affiliated with a church, institution or school recognized by the organization; school and institutional Companies must also have a partner Christian church in order to meet the establishment requirements. The importance of the church lies in its support for the Company's mission to preach the gospel and provide Christian education to youth. Young people can also get to know about Christianity and church-going through attending Company gatherings. Therefore, the church must be able to collaborate with the work of The Boys' Brigade in order to achieve synergy.
3. DISCIPLINE
Discipline is an essential pillar in The Boys' Brigade. The founder, Sir William Alexander Smith, used this method to manage and nurture his Sunday school students. Through drill training, Brigaders can learn to be focused, disciplined, and develop team spirit. Officers also require Brigaders to adhere to Company rules, while teaching them the idea behind these Company rules, as well as the importance of respecting discipline.
4. UNIFORM
As a uniformed group, the uniform is certainly an important hallmark of The Boys' Brigade. Wearing our special and unique uniform, Brigaders shall be confident and feel a sense of belonging to the organization. Officers also reminds Brigaders of the symbolic meaning of their uniform and techniques for maintaining its appearance. Brigaders learn the importance of maintaining their physical appearance in uniform as they represent BB, and also keep in mind to focus on building their character and good qualities.
5. AWARDS/PROMOTION
The progressive award scheme is another distinctive element of The Boys' Brigade. By using badges and other awards to attract young people to participate, we motivate them to acquire new knowledge and skills, fostering a goal-oriented pursuit to improve among Brigaders. These awards are worn on the uniform, giving Brigaders to gain a greater sense of achievement.
6. ACTIVITIES
Having diverse activities is also one of the principles of The Boys' Brigade. We emphasizes the incorporation of different activities to help young people achieve a comprehensive development in morality, intellect, physique, sociality, aesthetics, and spirituality. By participating in these activities, Brigaders learn to get along with each other, achieve whole-person development, gradually willing to stay in the Company to grow.
7. ADVANCEMENT
Similar to the award system, the promotion system is also encourages Brigaders to strive for improvement. Companies can select Brigaders with commitment and leadership abilities, and appoint them to assist the Officers in certain duties, thereby enhancing their sense of responsibility. Unlike earning badges, when considering the promotion of Brigaders, Officers not only look at whether their skills meet the standard, but also pay great attention to their conduct and character, and whether they are suitable to be good role models for others.
The above listed the seven principles of The Boys' Brigade. These can be considered the groundwork that constitutes the Boys' Brigade. To achieve the ideal in The Boys' Brigade, the Officers' commitment to Brigaders' growth, their understanding of the vision of The Boys' Brigade, and their commitment to faith and service are also crucial. And so, The Boys' Brigade also places great emphasis on the training and continuous learning of the Officers, and constantly updates the curriculum content to meet the needs of Officers.
